When do I have to start keeping digital records?

From 6 April 2026, if you earn £50k+ a year, you’ll need to start keeping digital records and use MTD-compatible software to track income and expenses as they happen and not just at year-end.

If you earn £30k–£50k your start date is April 2027.

If your income is under £30k HMRC is considering lowering the threshold to £20k from 2028

It’s all part of HMRC’s plan to make tax simpler, faster, and more accurate.

This video will help you get ahead. Contact Honey Barrett and let us help you prepare for MTD.

What counts as MTD-compatible software?

Take a look at our latest video and find out if you have the correct software for Making Tax Digital for ITSA in 2026

From April 2026, self-employed people and landlords earning over £50,000 a year must use MTD-compatible software to:

  • Keep digital records
  • Send quarterly updates
  • Submit End of Period Statements and Final Declarations

This can be cloud software like Xero, Quickbooks, Sage, or bridging tools, as long as it’s HMRC-approved.

Are there any benefits to the changes for Self-Assessment for MTD for ITSA?

This video will help you understand how MTD can benefit you.

With digital records and quarterly updates, you’ll have a clear view of your tax position all year, no more January surprises.

It helps reduce errors, saves time, and makes managing your finances more efficient. Using software keeps you organised, compliant, and in control, giving you peace of mind.

Contact Honey Barrett to get prepared and stay ahead of the changes.

I have more than one sole trade business and rental income will I need to do a separate submission for each?

Watch our video and find out what MTD means for you.

If you have more than one sole trade business or rental income, you’ll need separate digital records for each and submit a quarterly update plus an End of Period Statement for each one.

For landlords, self-employed individuals, or those with multiple businesses, it’s a good idea to set up a separate bank account for each revenue stream. It may sound like more admin, but the right MTD-compatible software can help you manage everything in one place, keeping you compliant and in control.

Contact Honey Barrett to get prepared and stay ahead of the changes.

My eligible income is below the 2026 threshold, when am I likely to be affected by MTD and can I opt into MTD early if I am ready?

Will Making Tax Digital for Income Tax affect you? This informative video will help you prepare for MTD.

If your self-employment and property income is below £50,000, you’re not affected in April 2026.

If you earn over £30k you’ll need to start from April 2027.

If you earn over £20k, the expected start date is April 2028 (HMRC to confirm).

Find out how you can opt in early! HMRC allows voluntary sign-up now, so if you’re ready to start managing your taxes digitally, why wait?

Take a look, at our video to see how we can make MTD work for you.

If you are wondering if you’ll still need to file a Self-Assessment tax return. You do but not in the traditional way.

If you’re affected by MTD, you’ll submit quarterly updates and a final declaration through approved software instead. It’s still about reporting your income, just in a more digital, streamlined way.
